Does Anyone Actually Care About Wine?
A few thoughts on wine, summer events, and why "perfect" was never the point
Lately at events, I keep noticing the same thing: a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc sitting on a table in 85-degree heat. No ice bucket, no cooler, just doing its best in the sun.
And it got me wondering, (aside from “why didn’t they hire me?”) do people actually care whether their wine is served at the right temperature? Or is that just a wine-professional thing?
Probably a bit of both.
Wine occupies a funny place in our culture. On one hand, people in the industry (myself included) can talk for hours about vineyard sites, fermentation, aging vessels, and serving temps. On the other hand, it's just a beverage — one that shows up at beach days, girls' nights, weddings, breakups, celebrations, and totally ordinary Tuesdays.
And honestly, that's what makes wine so interesting. It's complicated to make and wonderfully simple to enjoy.
The point was never perfection
The farmer growing the grapes cares. The winemaker cares. The person selling the bottle probably cares too. But the person drinking it? They're usually just trying to have a good time — and all they have to do is open it and pour.
What I don't love is when wine education makes people feel like they're doing it wrong, because that's never the goal. The real point is simply that a few small things can make wine taste noticeably better:
Keeping white wine cold
Giving red wine a slight chill in summer
Not letting a bottle bake in direct sunlight for hours
These aren't snobby rules but the wine equivalent of drinking iced coffee while it's still cold or eating fries before they get soggy. Nobody calls that pretentious. We just call it enjoying something at its best.
More context, not more rules
I don't think the next generation of wine drinkers is looking for more rules. I think they want more context, more confidence, and more permission to enjoy wine in a way that actually fits their lives. That's what I'm trying to build with ECR — a place where wine is interesting without being intimidating, and where learning feels fun rather than like homework.
I'd love to hear from you
